Since the travel revolution of the 1960s and the onset of package holidays the cost of flying has plummeted and travelling to even far away foreign countries has become routine for millions of ordinary people, so much so that many of us can feel completely “at home” in any major city, in any country in the world. Foreign travel no longer means having to adapt to strange food and unfamiliar hotels and many international hotel chains have introduced Western standards into everything from beds bathrooms and restaurants to online bookings. A welcome development has been the almost universal acceptance of climate control; it would now be unthinkable for many of us to travel to some parts of the globe without our air-conditioned aircraft, taxis and hotel rooms - the hardy souls of the 1960s almost invariably had to contend with the humidity, smells, and noise of the locality penetrating into their hotel bedrooms and although these delights are still available to the intrepid (or economy-minded) voyager they are not what most of us want, thank you!

The travel market has changed dramatically since those early days when we were all instructed as to which time of day or night to present ourselves at the airport where after queueing for what seemed a lifetime we were herded together onto an aircraft, then from the aircraft to a coach, to be finally deposited at a hotel where we were allocated a room to sleep off some of our exhaustion so that we could be bright and alert to meet our tour guide who would plan our holiday, and the tour company's commissions, at the inevitable early morning meeting with the inevitable free sangria. At the end of the holiday we would then be herded back onto the coach, packed into an aircraft after a sweltering few hours at an airport with nowhere to sit and indeterminate delays before being finally deposited at a UK airport, tired, dishevilled and in need of a stiff drink, at any time of day or night.

Things are a little different now. Most of us have realised that flying abroad is not such a big deal anymore and thanks to Internet booking we can now have our own choice of the date of travel, the flight times, the type of aircraft or seats that we want to sit in, the hotels and individual rooms that we prefer and we have complete flexiblity if we decide on two-centre holidays, tours, or care hire to name but a few. And since English is the universal language and the credit card is the universal currency the world is now, truly, our oyster!
